Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
You will need to complete a CBT if:
- You want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine up to 50 cc with a max speed of 31 Mph) If you are 16 years old you may only ride a 50 cc moped until your 17th birthday.
- You want to ride a motorcycle and are 17 years old. If you obtained your car licence before 1st Feb 2001 you do not need to do a CBT to ride a moped.
On completion a DL196 is issued valid for 2 years. To take a full bike test you must next take a motorcycle theory test (see DSA website for full details).
Practical Test
- Restricted (125 cc) test (17 years):- You are restricted to 33bhp for 2 years after which you may ride any size machine.
- 500 cc test (21 years): After taking your test on a 500cc bike you may ride any size machine.
Remember your CBT and theory test certificates are only valid for 2 years. If a full test is not taken during this time you will need to retake them when they expire.
